Source: USDA Supply and Utilization Charts 1910-2000:

  • Americans consumed 2.2 billion gallons of tea in 2000, or about 7.8 gallons per person, actually down from 10 gallons at the beginning of the twentieth century.

  • American tea consumption peaked during World War I at more than 11 gallons per person (possibly because these figures included American servicemen abroad).

  • American tea consumption was at its lowest point during the mid-1930s and again in the late 1950s, averaging less than 6 gallons per person for several years running.

  • According to industry sources (Luzianne's data used), about 80 percent of the tea now consumed in America is reportedly iced, which means that the average American drinks nearly 6.5 gallons of iced tea per year.

  • There are no figures separating tea consumption into regions, but it is safe to say that as much as 60 percent of the tea drunk in America is drunk in the South, and most of that (as much as 90 percent) is iced.
